Sooke Fire Rescue and Mutual Aid Partners Respond Report of Morning Structure Fire

Tuesday, September 19, 2023 – On Tuesday, September 19, 2023 at 6:54 a.m. Sooke Rescue Service and mutual aid partners, Otter Point and Metchosin Fire Departments responded to a report of a commercial structure fire at 6750 West Coast Road.

Upon arrival, staff at The Hope Centre’s quick response helped ensure the safety of residents. Evacuation of the building continued under fire services while additional crews responded to the cause, a kitchen fire.

One person on scene was assessed by BC Ambulance Paramedics for possible smoke inhalation. There were no other reported injuries to residents, staff or first responders.

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), “cooking is the leading cause of home fires, with nearly half (49 percent) of all home fires involving cooking equipment; cooking is also the leading cause of home fire injuries.”

Cooking safety is also this year’s theme for Fire Prevention Week, taking place October 8-14, 2023. Residents are reminded of these helpful tips from the NFPA:

  • Always keep a close eye on what you’re cooking. For foods with longer cook times, such as those that are simmering or baking, set a timer to help monitor them carefully.
  • Clear the cooking area of combustible items and keep anything that can burn, such as dish towels, oven mitts, food packaging, and paper towels.
  • Turn pot handles toward the back of the stove. Keep a lid nearby when cooking. If a small grease fire starts, slide the lid over the pan and turn off the burner.
  • Create a “kid and pet-free zone” of at least three feet (one meter) around the cooking area and anywhere else hot food or drink is prepared or carried.

As always, the District extends its appreciation to our mutual aid partners for their response and assistance to support the safety and well-being of everyone in our community.
