District of Sooke Mayor and Council are proud to announce that the newly constructed staircase at Cains Family Park is now open.

An official opening ceremony will be held on Tuesday, September 17, 2019 at 1:15 p.m.

Cains Family Park was donated to the District of Sooke in 2005 by the Cains Family, who wished to provide public access to the Sooke harbour through the creation of a waterfront park. Previously undeveloped, visitors to the area, including students from nearby Sooke Elementary, were required to traverse a steeply sloped trail in order to access the water.

Over the past year drainage infrastructure upgrades were completed in the Kennedy Road neighbourhood, creating an opportunity to piggy-back on work already underway, and save costs associated with improving water access at Cains Family Park. Having heard from the public that these upgrades would improve safety and accessibility issues, Council directed staff to proceed with construction of a staircase.

“I am hopeful that the construction of this staircase will result in more young people exploring the beach, learning about our natural heritage and the traditions of the T’Sou-ke Nation.” says Mayor Maja Tait. “Connecting all residents to our beautiful natural environment helps build a sense of place and community pride, both of which are priorities of Council.”

Mayor Tait welcomes the public to join her at Cains Family Park (6511 Water Street) for the official opening ceremony. Parking is extremely limited, and attendees should plan for a short walk to the ceremony site.
