Nov 19 Update: Church and Otter Point Road Construction Projects

Friday, November 19, 2021 – Two major construction projects in Sooke’s town core remain on schedule for year-end completion.  The District is working with contractors to provide residents with regular updates. Please continue to visit sooke.ca/news for the latest district information.

Monday’s weather event and resulting Malahat closure prevented work on Monday and Tuesday this week. Hazelwood Construction mobilized crews in Sooke with local accommodations to ensure work could continue for the remainder of the week.

Otter Point Road:

The primary focus for this week has been drainage works and asphalt removal at the intersection of Otter Point Road and Highway 14.

Works at the intersection will continue next week. Crews are also preparing the site for curb installation later this month/into early December.

Church Road:

The primary focus for this week has been the west side of Church Road doing asphalt removal, sidewalk and curb preparation. Work is transitioning to the east side and this work will continue into early next week.

Traffic will be southbound only from Country Road to Highway 14 next week as this east side work is completed.

Tentatively, on Thursday, November 25, the traffic signals at Highway 14 and Church will be down for several hours (approx. 9am to 3pm) to relocate the traffic control kiosk. Again, at this time, this date for this work has not yet been confirmed. We hope to have confirmation by Monday (November 22) and are doing our utmost to keep the community informed as we recognize that this will cause significant traffic disruptions.

The most significant traffic disruptions on this project are anticipated for November 29th to December 3 and December 6 to 10 as all work is within the travel portions of the roadway and includes:

  • Pouring curbs on both sides (1-2days).
  • Removal of remaining asphalt and any unsuitable material below (5-days)
  • Placing subbase and base gravels (3-days)
  • Paving (1-2days)

Once paving is complete (around December 10th) Hazelwood shares, “all remaining work will have little impact on traffic.” The final elements of the project will include sidewalks, irrigation, installing of streetlights, landscaping and painting.

RELATED NOTICE:

The District previously advised of a single-day planned traffic event on Highway 14 on November 17th resulting in single-lane alternating traffic between Drennan Street and Phillips Road. Due to Monday’s weather event, this work has been rescheduled for Wednesday, November 24, 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Delays are to be expected. Please allow additional time for your commute.
