Thursday, April 25, 2024 – In response to the growing demand for electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure and as part of the federal government’s initiative to promote sustainable transportation, Sooke is pleased to announce the installation of 8 new public EV charging stations. These stations, set to be operational in the coming months, will enhance accessibility to EV charging facilities in our community.
The announcement comes as a part of a broader investment by the federal government in EV charging infrastructure across the Capital region. Minister Sean Fraser, Minister George Heyman, and Capital Regional District (CRD) Board Chair Colin Plant unveiled the initiative earlier this week, emphasizing its significance in facilitating the adoption of electric vehicles and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
“The addition of 8 new public charging stations will not only make EV ownership more accessible and convenient for our residents but also contribute to our collective efforts in reducing greenhouse gas emissions,” said Sooke Mayor, Maja Tait.
The proposed locations for the new charging stations have been chosen to maximize accessibility for the units. Pending technical feasibility work, two stations will be installed at municipal hall, two will be situated near the Sooke Community Hall and Sooke Legion on Eustace Road, and four will be located at the SEAPARC Recreation Centre.
The CRD will oversee the coordination and implementation of the project.
“We are grateful for the support from the CRD and both the federal and provincial governments and look forward to welcoming EV drivers to utilize these new charging facilities in Sooke,” adds Tait.
