Backyard Burning Season Closure Reminder: April 30th Deadline Approaching

Friday, April 26, 2024 – As the deadline for backyard burning season closure approaches on April 30th, the District reminds residents to adhere to the Fire Regulation Bylaw. The Fire Regulation prohibits backyard burning from May 1 to October 31, with the possibility of extension under the direction of the Fire Chief for the safety of the community.

Despite recent light rain, conditions remain seasonally dry, and projections suggest even drier weather in the coming months. This underscores the importance of exercising caution and following regulations diligently.

Please report burning concerns to Sooke Fire or Bylaw Services. The District relies on resident assistance to report concerns, call:

  • 642.1634 (District of Sooke Reception) or 250.642.5422 (Sooke Fire Hall Reception); or
  • email bylaw@sooke.ca with the address, date and time of concern, and photo (if possible).

While backyard burning is prohibited after April 30, campfires will remain allowed until further direction from the Wildfire Service or at the call of the Sooke Fire Chief.

If having a campfire in your backyard, it is essential to observe safety guidelines to prevent accidents and minimize environmental impact. Beach fires are not permitted within the District of Sooke. Remember to:

  • Keep campfires small and manageable (no more than 60 centimetres in diameter).
  • Clear the area around the campfire to prevent the spread of flames.
  • Never leave a campfire unattended.
  • Ensure the fire is fully extinguished before leaving.

Additionally, for residents engaged in Scotch broom removal, a complimentary drop-off service will be available at the District of Sooke Parks Yard, located at 2070 Kaltasin Road, on Saturdays from May 4th to May 25th, between 11am and 3pm.
