Snow Removal: Road and Sidewalk Winter Care

Monday, December 21, 2020 – The District of Sooke contracts maintenance of all municipal roads to Victoria Contracting. During periods of heavy snowfall, Victoria Contracting clears roadways in a prioritized sequence, beginning with critical routes such as bus routes, school zones, and critical intersections. Victoria Contracting has a mandate to reach every municipal road within 48 hours, but their first and foremost responsibility is clearing these critical routes.

Local roads may be plowed to accommodate single lane traffic only during the first pass of the plow. This is a temporary measure, and the roads will be revisited and cleared more substantially once every local road has been plowed once. De-icing chemical and winter abrasive are applied during plowing operations depending on temperature and location, however, the roads will likely still be slippery. Please use extreme caution.

If you have a specific concern, such as black ice on a steep hill or a sharp curve, please contact the District of Sooke during office hours (8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday-Friday) by phone at 250.642.1634.  After office hours, Victoria Contracting can be contacted directly at 250.474.2688.

Maintenance of Highway 14 (Sooke Road & West Coast Road) is the responsibility of the Provincial Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure and their contractor, EMCON. If your concern is regarding Highway 14, please call the EMCON hotline at 1-866-353-3136, or contact the province directly through DriveBC’s automated function at https://www.drivebc.ca/rahp/identifyProblem.html

Residents and business owners are responsible for clearing snow and ice from sidewalks that border their property. Please be a good neighbour and help to keep Sooke safe by keeping walkways clear.
