Campfires Permitted as of Wednesday, September 27; Backyard Burning Not Permitted in Sooke

Wednesday, September 27, 2023The District of Sooke will be lifting the campfire prohibition (category 1) to align with the Coastal Fire Centre’s direction starting tomorrow, Wednesday, September 27th at 12:00 pm.

Always keep your campfire small, ensure it has a fuel-free area around it (20 feet from property lines and structures), never leave it unattended, have a water source present and ensure it is fully out (cool to the touch) before leaving the area.

Please be reminded that the Backyard Burning season remains CLOSED until Wednesday, November 1st. Open burning (category 2 and 3), and the burning of garden and yard debris are not permitted in Sooke at this time. Backyard burning in Sooke is permitted from November 1-April 30 on days when the ventilation index is GOOD – only. Anyone burning must check the Venting Index for SRN VAN ISLD before burning. Fines for non-compliance are $200 for a first offence and $400 for a second offence.
