Mayor Maja Tait Proclaims September 2024 as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month in Sooke

Tuesday, September 10, 2024 – At the September 9, 2024, Regular Council meeting, Mayor Maja Tait officially proclaimed September as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month in the District of Sooke. This proclamation reflects Sooke’s commitment to supporting children and families affected by cancer and raising awareness about the impacts of childhood cancer.

Childhood cancer remains one of the leading causes of disease-related deaths among Canadian children. By raising awareness, we can support research efforts, improve treatments, and provide vital services for affected families.

“By recognizing Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, we are sending a message of hope and solidarity to children battling cancer and their families,” says Mayor Maja Tait. “Together, we can contribute to raising awareness and supporting efforts to find a cure.”

This year, the Cops for Cancer Tour de Rock will be making its way to Sooke on October 2, 2024. We are especially proud to support one of our own, Sooke RCMP’s Mary-Ellen Somerville, who is riding to raise funds for pediatric cancer research. Community members can contribute to Mary-Ellen’s campaign and support children facing cancer by donating here.

The District of Sooke encourages the community to wear gold in support of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, cheer on the Tour de Rock riders, and learn more about how they can make a difference by donating or volunteering with organizations that provide support to families.
