Sooke Accepting Applications for ‘Paid On-Call’ Firefighters

The Sooke Fire Rescue Department is accepting applicants for ‘Paid on Call’ Firefighter positions. Join the team and gain valuable skills that enable you to help residents of Sooke in a time of need. All Firefighter training, health and wellness programs are provided through the department. Remuneration levels are based on individual contributions, rank and qualifications. Hourly compensation is provided for selected emergency response activities.

Sooke Fire Rescue relies on Paid On-call Firefighters to complement the career response team in effort to meet the service levels that a growing community demands. While volunteer members have received a stipend for their service in the past, the Paid On-Call model was initiated this spring and has already been adopted by other municipalities within the region, province – and nation.

“The move towards a Paid On-Call model was inspired by the Sooke Volunteer Firefighters Association membership, and I was happy to support the initiative,” shares Chief, Kenn Mount. “It’s an increasingly common model that helps offset some of the costs of being a volunteer,” Mount offered. “I think it’s important to provide some financial recognition for the meaningful work our members step up to provide.”

Residents of Sooke are invited to come to an Information Session on September 11th at 7pm in Council Chamber to pick up an application to join the January 2020 recruit training class. Submit a complete package by October 11, 2019. Visit the Fire Rescue Recruitment pages at www.sooke.ca for more details.
