Juan de Fuca Community Trails Society Announces 17th Annual Invasive Species Removal Initiative at Whiffin Spit

Friday, February 23, 2024 – The Juan de Fuca Community Trails Society is gearing up for its 17th consecutive year of combatting invasive species, with a primary focus on removing broom from the picturesque Whiffin Spit. Following a successful campaign in 2023, where volunteers dedicated over 116 hours across six sessions, the society is once again mobilizing its efforts in response to the reemergence of broom in 2024 – and you are invited to join them!

Despite the commendable efforts made in previous years, broom is a persistent invader; the seed can remain viable for decades and as expected broom has resurfaced, presenting a continuing challenge for the local ecosystem. The majority of the broom stands at approximately 30 centimetres in height, which can be quickly addressed with timely action and a few helping hands. Together, efforts can be successful to exhaust the seed stock and prevent broom from maturing to reseed.

In addition to the recurring threat of broom, the group is looking to address invasive blackberry that has begun encroaching in the area as well to best allow the native species to thrive.

The Society’s commitment to environmental stewardship is unwavering and truly commendable. Community members are invited to join forces in the upcoming removal sessions. Volunteers can participate in various capacities, contributing to the preservation of the unique ecosystem at Whiffin Spit. The team has set their first “clean up, meet up” for Tuesday, March 5 from 9am to 11:30am for anyone interested in joining.
