Wednesday, December 13, 2023 – The District is sharing this information from the Sooke School 62. In addition, we extend our appreciation to fire rescue crews, Sooke School District staff and the Journey Middle School Community for their response and care to ensure everyone’s safety and the return to classes without disruption this morning after Tuesday evening’s small fire:
The Sooke Fire Department was called to attend a small fire at Journey Middle School during last night’s band concert. All students, staff and community members were safely evacuated from the building when the fire alarm sounded and no one was injured. The small fire occurred in a utility room and was extinguished by the school’s sprinkler system.
Our Facilities staff immediately attended and began working with Sooke Fire personnel to clean up the water from the sprinkler system. The sprinkler and fire alarm systems were also reset so that the building can safely be reoccupied.
Thank you to everyone involved in safely evacuating the school. We would also like to extend our gratitude to the Sooke Fire Department and the SD62 staff who worked well into the night to ensure the school could open this morning.
