Join Us for Wildfire Preparedness Day on May 6th at John Phillips Memorial Park

Friday, May 5, 2023 – Wildfire Preparedness Day is on Saturday, May 6th this year! The 2023 wildfire season has already started and there is no better time to get informed and take action to help protect your home and property.  Learn how to become FireSmart and reduce your fire risk. Grab some FireSmart resources and play a FireSmart game at a community pop-up this Saturday, 10am-2pm in John Philips Memorial Park (2201 Otter Point Road).

Book a free FireSmart Home Assessment for a chance to WIN a Wildfire Automated Sprinkler Protection (WASP) Kit. It is so important to practice FireSmart principles in conjunction with these sprinkler kits for your best protection against wildfire and/or neighbouring structure fires. A well-maintained home, with a fire-resistant roof and a FireSmart immediate/intermediate zone (up to 10 metres from the home) is 90% more likely to survive a wildfire. All residents who book an assessment by July 31, 2023, will be entered into the draw. Book your home assessment online or call 250.642.5422.

Fires on the coast can be vigorous, especially in steep/difficult terrain and/or in drought-stricken areas. Lightning storms and water shortages are becoming more common during the summer months and impact both fire behaviour and response operations on the coast. Sooke is located within the Wildland Urban Interface zone meaning our community is at a greater risk of a devasting wildfire. Homeowners play an important role in wildfire prevention; they can directly reduce the wildfire risk and damage to their property by using FireSmart principles.
