Fire Prevention Week 2024: “Smoke alarms: Make them work for you!”

Wednesday, October 2, 2024 – As Fire Prevention Week (October 6-12, 2024) approaches, the District of Sooke Fire Rescue Service urges residents to ensure their smoke alarms are functional. This year’s theme, “Smoke alarms: Make them work for you!”, emphasizes the life-saving role of working smoke alarms.

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), homes with functional smoke alarms reduce fire-related fatalities by over 50%. Yet, three out of five fire deaths occur in homes without working smoke alarms.

“Smoke alarms serve as the first line of defense in a home fire, but they need to be working in order to protect people,” said Lorraine Carli, vice president of outreach and advocacy at NFPA. “This year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign helps better educate the public about simple but critical steps they can take to make sure their homes have smoke alarms in all the needed locations and that they’re working properly.”

The District of Sooke Fire Rescue Service encourages all residents to follow these smoke alarm safety tips:

  • Install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on every level of the home.
  • Ensure smoke alarms are accessible to all family members, including those with sensory or physical disabilities.
  • Test smoke alarms monthly by pressing the test button.
  • Replace smoke alarms every 10 years.
