District Reminds Residents about Local Backyard Burning Regulations

Thursday, October 17, 2024 – The District of Sooke reminds residents of the seasonal backyard burning regulations outlined in the Fire Protection Services Bylaw, ensuring safe and responsible burning practices. Burning is permitted from November 1 to April 30, and only when the Venting Index is rated as “Good” to maintain air quality.

Safety Guidelines for Responsible Burning

In addition to following the Venting Index requirements, residents are urged to take the following steps to ensure safe and clean burning:

  • Keep Materials Dry:
    • Store wood and other burnable materials in a dry, covered area to reduce moisture as burning wet or damp material produces excessive smoke, impacting both air quality and visibility in the community.
  • Burn Only Organic Yard Waste:
    • Stick to leaves, branches, and other garden debris. Avoid burning household waste, construction materials, or treated wood, which release toxic fumes.
  • Monitor Weather Conditions:
    • In addition to checking the Venting Index, avoid burning on windy days to prevent embers from spreading.
  • Never Leave Fires Unattended:
    • Always have water or a fire extinguisher nearby and fully extinguish the fire before leaving the area.
  • Consider Alternatives:
    • Explore composting or chipping as eco-friendly ways to dispose of yard waste.

Burning Season and Venting Requirements
