District Adopts 2022 Tax Rate Bylaw

Tuesday, May 17, 2022 –  District of Sooke Council has approved the 2022 Tax Rate Bylaw which includes a 6.09 percent increase, equating to $78 per average residential assessed property, in municipal tax revenue over 2021.

The municipal tax portion accounts for 43.9 percent of what property owners will see on their residential tax bill. 56.1 percent of the charges are collected on behalf of other agencies, including Provincial School Tax, Regional Hospitals, Capital Regional District and BC Transit. All items are distributed on one tax notice so property owners do not need to deal with multiple bills.

Based on the average residential property assessment, anticipated agency fee changes for this year are:

Tax Authority $ Increase

(average assessed property)

Municipal 78
Library 4
Regional District 30
Provincial School Tax 87
BC Assessment 3
Municipal Finance Authority No change
BC Transit 22

“The 2022 budget continues with community priorities such as implementing the Transportation as well as Parks and Trails Master Plans,” said Mayor Maja Tait. “Improving transportation infrastructure is a significant focus. With some corridor improvements complete now on Church Road and Otter Point Road,  we recognize we have a lot more work to do. We will complete the design work for the Throup Road Connector, Phillips Road Corridor and Charters Road, and continue with our road paving program in 2022.”

The budget is shaped by strategic priorities, approved master plans, and public input through an open budget process beginning in June with citizen participation in the Citizen Budget Survey. Residents can participate in the 2023 Citizen Budget Survey from June 15-July 17 at letstalk.sooke.ca/budget.

Property Tax notices will be issued later this month with payment due July 4, 2022.
