Tuesday, November 12, 2024 – With heavy hearts and deep gratitude, we remember Mr. John Horgan, a leader who not only served Sooke but embraced it wholeheartedly, leaving a notable mark on our community. John’s commitment to Sooke and British Columbia was remarkable; he worked tirelessly to improve the lives of everyone around him, always bringing his warmth, humour, and genuine spirit along the way.
John’s final announcement as Premier, right here in Sooke, underscored his commitment to our community with provincial support for a new community health centre—a lasting contribution to the health and well-being of our residents. Over the years, he championed investments in Sooke — from Highway 14 improvements to supporting the expansion of our wastewater treatment plant.
Yet, it was John’s presence at community events, his spirit of playfulness, and his down-to-earth approach that truly endeared him to us. He was always there—celebrating with neighbours on Canada Day and cheering alongside friends at the Sooke Fall Fair. John was not just a leader; he was a beloved member of our community who shared in our laughter and our celebrations.
One of our most cherished memories with him was at the opening of the multi-use sports box, where he didn’t hesitate to get on the field, coaching the first lacrosse game held at Ravens Ridge Park with great enthusiasm. His love for our community and Sooke’s youth shone brightly that day, as he helped usher in a new space for families, athletes, and friends to gather and play.
On behalf of the District of Sooke, we extend our heartfelt condolences to his wife, Ellie, and his children. Our thoughts are with you in this time of loss. John’s legacy of service, humour, and kindness will continue to inspire us, and the memories he created with us will bring warmth to our hearts for years to come. Thank you, John, for all you did and for everything you were to Sooke.
Flags at the municipal hall will be lowered to half-mast in honour of John Horgan, and opportunities for British Columbians to offer their condolences will be shared with the public by the province.
