October 25, 2024: High Wind Warning Issued for Greater Victoria

Friday, October 25, 2024 – Environment Canada has issued a High Wind Warning for Greater Victoria. While current mapping indicates a lesser impact for Sooke, the District is reminding residents that strong winds can increase the risk of falling branches and debris, particularly in wooded areas, posing hazards to those outdoors.

Please use caution by avoiding densely treed areas during high winds and be mindful, in calm conditions particularly after a weather event, weakened branches can fall unexpectedly, so sit is important to stay aware of your surroundings.

Safety recommendations include:

  • Avoid walking in heavily wooded areas during high winds.
  • Be cautious of weakened branches and avoid lingering under trees.
  • Avoid parks altogether during peak wind times if possible.
  • Keep an eye on weather updates.

If you encounter fallen or damaged trees in District parks or roadways, please report them by calling 250.642.1634.

Important Safety Reminder:

If you see fallen or damaged trees impacting power lines, stay at least 10 metres back and call 911 immediately. Do not approach or attempt to move the trees.
