Access Awareness Day

Event Details

Saturday June 5, 2021 is Access Awareness Day. It’s a day for communities to come together to celebrate what it means to be truly accessible and inclusive for everyone. This year’s theme is “Say Yes to Access”.

Access Awareness Day falls within National AccessAbility Week (May 30 to June 5), which is always celebrated in the last week in May and is designed to celebrate the valuable contributions of Canadians with disabilities and recognize the efforts of individuals, communities and workplaces that are actively working to remove barriers to accessibility and inclusion.

The District of Sooke is committed to removing and preventing barriers across its services, programs, and infrastructure, in order to benefit the community in a way that respects the dignity and independence of people with disabilities.

Our Commitment to Accessibility, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion

  • Installed accessible door openers throughout inside offices at the District Municipal Hall
  • Installed T-Coil loop system in Council Chambers and at reception counter so that those with hearing aids can have the meeting streamed directly through to their hearing aids
  • Installed a secured reception area and a wheelchair-accessible counter at the Sooke Fire Hall entrance and municipal hall
  • Installed an accessible washroom including toilet, sink and all amenities at the District of Sooke Fire Hall

Funding from the Rick Hansen Foundation (RHF) BC Accessibility Grants program, thanks to the Province of British Columbia made these projects possible.
