Thank you Community Volunteers!

Friday, April 24, 2021 – The National Volunteer Week theme for 2021 is The Value of One, The Power of Many. It reflects on the awe-inspiring acts of kindness by millions of individuals and the magic that happens when we work together towards a common purpose.

Volunteer Canada describes the remarkable impact of volunteers over the last year, “we have seen people supporting family, friends, neighbours, and strangers, people standing up to systemic racism, and people sharing insights on how to create a more just and equitable society.  We recognize the value of the caring and compassion that each one has shown another, and we recognize the power of people, organizations, and sectors working together.”

In Sooke, we recognize the hundreds of volunteers supporting community organizations and District activities. Within the District of Sooke, volunteers participate on committees, support our fire services, assist with our Emergency Support Program, and operate the Sooke Emergency Radio Group (SERG). They contribute thousands of hours, sharing their time, energy and expertise for the betterment of the community.

The long-standing contribution of volunteers is Sooke is evident through an anecdote recognizing “Sooke – Volunteer Capital of Canada.” Local Historian Elida Peers shares, “Many years ago (around 1980 I think) the Toronto Star weekly publication did a feature story on Sooke holding it up as an example of perhaps the most outstanding example of volunteerism in the country.”

Outstanding is certainly a worthy descriptor of volunteers in Sooke. On behalf of the District, thank you volunteers – stewards and champions of our community! “We salute you!”
