#ShopSookeFirst Community Story: Cafe VOSINO: Where Coffee and Community Go Hand in Hand

Friday, April 11, 2025 – Right in the heart of Sooke, Cafe VOSINO is steeped in more than just good coffee—it’s steeped in connection. It’s a welcoming space where locals gather, friendships percolate, and newcomers are always greeted with a warm smile and an even warmer cup.

What makes Cafe Vosino truly special isn’t just what’s in your cup—it’s who’s sitting across the table. After the closure of the much-loved Stick in the Mud Coffee House, a dedicated group of regulars couldn’t imagine Sooke without their local café. So, they got together, formed a cooperative, and rallied hundreds of residents and investors to keep the spirit of the space alive. Not long after, the doors reopened as Cafe Vosino—still pouring the same quality coffee, still fostering the same vibe, now proudly community-owned.

“It was really inspiring to see how many people wanted to keep this place going,” says Manager Nathan Tenney. “There’s a sense of ownership here that goes beyond finances—people care deeply about this space, and it shows in every interaction.”

Cafe Vosino operates as part of the Sooke Community Investment Cooperative, and that ownership model is at the heart of its charm. Every latte, muffin, and conversation supports a bigger purpose: preserving a beloved local gathering place. It’s the kind of café where people know your name, your order, and maybe even your dog’s name too.

“We’re more than just a pit stop for caffeine,” Nathan laughs. “We’re a space where people meet, reconnect, feel safe, and feel seen. That’s not something you can create overnight—it’s something that grows over time when a community cares for a place.”

The team at Cafe Vosino is intentional about supporting the local economy as well, sourcing ingredients and goods from nearby producers and vendors. You’re not just supporting one business when you stop in—you’re fueling a whole network of local livelihoods.

The café is also home to countless memories and everyday moments that make a difference. “There are so many incredible stories from this space,” Nathan says. “People have told me this café is their refuge, their second home. I’ve witnessed so many beautiful connections—strangers becoming friends, regulars welcoming newcomers. Every single day, something heartwarming happens here.”
