#ShopSookeFirst Community Story: A Sea of Bloom – Cultivating Beauty and Community in Sooke

Friday, March 7, 2025 – As part of the District of Sooke and Sooke Chamber of Commerce’s #ShopSookeFirst campaign, we are proud to highlight A Sea of Bloom, a beloved flower and gift shop that has blossomed into a cherished part of Sooke’s local business community. Located at 2052 Otter Point Road, A Sea of Bloom is more than a flower shop—it’s a place where creativity, passion, and community spirit come together.

Owner Karen Stones planted the first seed of her floral journey 24 years ago, selling cut flowers at the Sooke Country Market and Metchosin Farmers Market. Her talent soon led her to designing floral arrangements for Sooke Harbour House and countless weddings. In 2010, her artistry was recognized with the Best Bridal Bouquet in British Columbia award at the BC Wedding Awards. In 2008, Karen opened her first brick-and-mortar shop in a quaint house near the roundabout before relocating to her current location to better serve the community.

“Our shop is a full-functioning flower shop with ‘flowers for all occasions,’ but it has also evolved into a large gift boutique featuring over 80 local, BC, and Canadian products,” says Karen. “Customers often tell us, ‘A shop full of beautiful things!’ That’s what we strive for—to offer something unique that brings joy to people’s lives.”

A Sea of Bloom is renowned not only for its stunning floral arrangements but also for its creative community engagement. One beloved tradition is Karen’s husband, Francis, dressing up in costume to wave to passersby during floral holidays throughout the year—a quirky and heartwarming gesture that has become a local favorite. “At first, a few people thought it was a bit crazy,” Karen laughs, “but most people love it and look forward to seeing Francis out there. It brings cheer to our community!”

Karen’s commitment to the Sooke community extends beyond her shop. She regularly donates products and advertises in local event programs, supporting artists, local businesses, and community initiatives. Her dedication has earned A Sea of Bloom numerous nominations in the Sooke Business Excellence Awards, reflecting the positive impact she and her shop have had on the community. “We get calls from customers all the time telling us how we’ve made someone’s day with the beautiful flowers or gifts they received. Hearing those kinds of comments makes all the hard work worth it.”
