Plan & Prepare Your Garden: Free Workshop to Kickstart Your Growing Season in Sooke

Friday, February 28, 2025 – The District of Sooke, in collaboration with the Compost Education Centre and the Vancouver Island Regional Library, is excited to offer a series of complimentary workshops designed to enhance community resiliency and food security.

The first workshop in the series, Plan & Prepare Your Garden, will take place on Thursday, March 13, from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM at the Sooke Library. This interactive session will provide participants with essential skills and knowledge to establish a thriving garden, including:

  • Understanding site conditions such as sun exposure, soil quality, and temperature
  • Planning for time and financial investment in a home garden
  • Selecting crops, determining planting schedules, and transitioning crops for year-round growing
  • Creating a personalized garden plan

“Building a resilient and food-secure community starts with empowering residents with the knowledge and skills to grow their own food,” says Christina Moog, District of Sooke Manager of Communications and Community Relations. “Beyond learning essential gardening techniques, this workshop provides a welcoming space for participants to connect with neighbours, share experiences, and build valuable community relationships. By coming together to support local food production, we strengthen both individual households and the broader community, ensuring Sooke remains a place where people can rely on one another and thrive together.”

This is an excellent opportunity for both beginner and experienced gardeners to refine their skills and contribute to a more food-secure Sooke.

Participation is free of charge, but pre-registration is required. Reserve your spot today by visiting: virl.bc.ca/event/prepare-your-garden/
