Parks update: Staff tend to Whiffin Spit as winter weather makes a mark

Friday, January 8, 2021 – While winter weather continues to make a mark at Whiffin Spit, the District of Sooke Parks Department is ready to respond.

Parks staff and Victoria Contracting will be working with equipment on Tuesday, January 12th to manage the cleanup. The public can expect to see a bobcat on-site and staff working to clear debris throughout the day. Parks and Environmental Services Coordinator Jessica Boquist shares, “We know what a cherished asset Whiffin Spit is to our community and how important, especially this year, our parks are outdoor spaces are to the public. Our team is working hard to manage debris and the winter weather impact at Whiffin Spit as best as we are able.”

The public visiting the popular park are advised to expect an uneven trail surface during the winter. “Generally, the public should expect the trail to function as a nature trail until enhanced maintenance can be completed in full at the end of the season,” says Boquist.

This is the second significant mid-season clean up after king tides rolled into the popular park in November.
