King Tide Advisory for Whiffin Spit Park and Coastal Areas

Monday, November 16, 2020 – The District of Sooke advises the public to use extra caution on beaches and shorelines today and tomorrow. Extreme high tides combined with surf may create hazardous conditions. It is anticipated that the region will be experiencing king tides (exceptionally high tides) until the end of the day on Tuesday, November 17th.

The impact of such tides includes large waves, strong currents, and shoreline flooding. Beaches can go from completely dry to several feet under water in a very short period of time. These surges can be powerful and unpredictable and have the potential to float or roll logs. Persons are advised to avoid in-water activities. Shoreline users are advised to stay well back from the water’s edge especially along rocky shorelines or islands.

District of Sooke staff will continue to monitor conditions. Parks and Environmental Services Coordinator Jessica Boquist shares, “Our team will be monitoring and managing additional debris at Whiffen Spit as best as we are able. Generally, the public should expect the trail to function as a nature trail until enhanced maintenance can be completed in full at the end of winter.”

Boquist adds, “Throughout winter months, it is a good idea for the public to be ‘coast smart’. Winter storms can be unpredictable.” Coast Smart has a dedicated website designed to enhance coastal safety with resources and videos. To learn more, visit the Coast Smart website at coastsmart.ca.
