OPEN AIR BURNING AND CAMPFIRE BAN CONTINUES (until further notice)

 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NEWS RELEASE                                                                  July 11, 2017
[Sooke, BC]

The District of Sooke issued an immediate ban on open air burning and campfires within the municipality that came into effect at noon on July 6, 2017. This prohibition aligns with restrictions outlined by The Coastal Fire Centre.

The ban applies to ALL open burning including campfires, beach fires and backyard fire pits within the District of Sooke. A reminder that burn barrels and beach fires are prohibited year-round. Propane and gas fueled BBQ’s/campfires are still permitted, but are to be used with caution and only in appropriate areas.

We need your help. Residents and visitors are to be vigilant in ensuring that ALL smoking materials are fully and carefully extinguished and not tossed outside. Due to the potential of sparks, residents are also being asked to be cautious when using outdoor equipment such as chainsaws and lawnmowers.

This ban aims to prevent human-caused wildfires, protect our natural environment and ensure public safety. The ban will be in force until further notice. Updates will be posted in local media and on the District’s website www.sooke.ca.

Please report any fires directly to 911, and any unauthorized activity that poses a risk of fire, to the Sooke Fire Department at 250.642.5422.
