District of Sooke Proclaims February 17 – 23, 2025 Heritage Week

Tuesday, February 4, 2025 – The District of Sooke is proud to proclaim February 17 – 23, 2025, as Heritage Week, recognizing the importance of preserving and celebrating the natural and cultural heritage that shapes our community. This year’s Heritage Week theme, “Heritage: Pastimes in Past Times,” invites residents to explore the traditional pastimes, games, and activities that have brought people together throughout history.

“Heritage connects us to our past, strengthens our sense of place, and contributes to a vibrant community,” says Mayor Maja Tait. “In Sooke, our cultural and natural heritage serve as a foundation for who we are today and inspire our future.”

Heritage Week is an opportunity to reflect on the diverse histories that make up Sooke’s identity. From the traditions of the T’Sou-ke and Scia’new First Nations, who have stewarded these lands and waters since time immemorial, to the pioneers and industries that shaped the region, Sooke’s heritage is rich and enduring.

The Sooke Region Museum and Visitor Centre will host special events throughout the week, offering hands-on activities, exhibits, and storytelling that bring local history to life.

“This year’s theme, ‘Pastimes in Past Times,’ is a fantastic way to reflect on the traditions, games and activities that shaped daily life in Sooke over generations,” says Michelle Richard, Executive Director of the Sooke Region Museum and Visitor Information Centre. “We invite the community to join us in exploring these stories, experiencing history in new ways, and celebrating the pastimes that have connected people throughout the ages.”

Heritage contributes significantly to economic activity, job creation, and tourism in Sooke. By embracing our heritage, we foster a sense of belonging, social well-being, and pride in our community. The District of Sooke invites all residents to celebrate Heritage Week 2025 by exploring local history, sharing stories, and engaging with the many heritage places and spaces that make Sooke unique.
