Tuesday, October 22, 2024 – The District of Sooke wishes all residents a fun and safe Halloween! As families gear up for trick-or-treating and festive celebrations, the District reminds everyone to prioritize safety while enjoying the spooky season.
Drivers are urged to be extra cautious on Halloween night. Motorists should reduce speed, remain alert, and be prepared to stop for pedestrians. Parents/guardians are encouraged to ensure their children wear bright or reflective costumes, carry flashlights, and use crosswalks where available.
Consumer Fireworks Prohibited in Sooke this year
Please note that the District of Sooke is not issuing consumer firework permits this Halloween season. As a result, fireworks are prohibited and fines for non-compliance will be issued. These rules are in place to ensure public safety, reduce fire risks, and protect the wellbeing of our community. We thank residents for their cooperation and understanding.
Fireworks-related injuries are a significant concern. According to data from the Canadian Hospitals Injury Reporting and Prevention Program, 65% of fireworks-related injuries happen at private homes, often involving bystanders, and 49% of these injuries occur to children under 15. The injuries can be severe, with burns and damage to the eyes and hands being the most common. In light of these risks, the District of Sooke’s prohibition on consumer fireworks is a necessary measure to protect public safety.
“I know fireworks have historically been a part of many Halloween festivities and I understand residents may feel disappointed, but safety comes first,” says District of Sooke Fire Chief Wayne Kennedy. “By choosing safer ways to celebrate, we’re protecting our community. For those still wanting to enjoy fireworks, there are safe, organized events nearby, like the one at Camp Bernard, hosted by Otter Point Fire. With a comprehensive safety plan in place, everyone can enjoy the fireworks safely.”

Halloween Safety Tips
As always, we encourage parents and children to keep safety in mind while celebrating:
- Walk in well-lit areas.
- Wear costumes that are visible in low light.
- Be mindful of pets—Halloween can be stressful for our furry friends.
- Drivers, be especially cautious of children crossing streets and walking along roads.
Let’s make this Halloween memorable with safe and enjoyable celebrations. Have a spooktacular time, Sooke!
