DERELICT VESSELS ARE “SAILING AWAY”

NEWS RELEASE
June 11, 2019
[Sooke, BC]

Heading out on the water this summer? You may notice that some of those abandoned boats that have been sinking in the Sooke Harbour and Basin are being removed.  District of Sooke staff been working with our partners at the CRD’s Abandoned Boat Program for nearly two years to identify derelict vessels, post notices, apply for federal funding and then finally remove and dispose of these vessels.

“Protecting Sooke’s natural resources ensures that our residents and visitors can enjoy everything our region has to offer for generations to come,” says Mayor Maja Tait. “The Sooke Harbour and Basin is one of our greatest treasures, which is why we are focusing on cleaning up vessels that threaten its health.”

Abandoned boats impact the health and safety of our shorelines, including the potential for leaking fuel, chemicals and garbage that seriously damage our marine environment.
