Tuesday, January 7, 2025 – As we begin 2025, I am honoured to reflect on Sooke’s accomplishments in 2024 and speak to our vision for the year ahead.

Last year, we made progress in improving our infrastructure and strengthening community resilience. Projects like the Church-Throup Roundabout and Charters Road enhance safety and connectivity, while the completion of the wastewater expansion project marked a major step forward in environmental stewardship and sustainable growth. These milestones reflect our shared commitment to building a stronger, safer, and more vibrant Sooke.
At the UBCM Convention, Council passionately advocated for the needs of our community, focusing on priorities such as improved transportation infrastructure, affordable housing, health care and local schools. These efforts highlight our ongoing commitment to representing Sooke’s interests at every level of government.
I would also like to, once again, extend my congratulations to former Councillor Dana Lajeunesse as he takes on his new role as MLA and Parliamentary Secretary for Accessibility. We look forward to collaborating with him and the province to enhance services and opportunities for Sooke residents.
We honour the legacy of Norm McInnis, Sooke’s former Chief Administrative Officer, whose vision guided many of the initiatives that continue to shape our community. His contributions leave a lasting impact, and his memory inspires us to carry forward his dedication to Sooke.
We also said goodbye to a dear friend, mentor and leader Mr. John Horgan. John served Sooke wholeheartedly, leaving a notable mark on our community. As I shared at the time of his passing, one of my most cherished memories with him was at the opening of the multi-use sports box. John joined Sooke children and youth in the box, coaching the first lacrosse game held at Ravens Ridge Park with great enthusiasm. This care, appreciation, and celebration for the children of our community is just one of the many qualities I respect and admire greatly about John’s tremendous public service and are attributes that form a part of his legacy.
A highlight of 2024 was welcoming young students to the municipal hall through our Council Club program, named by a local student. This initiative connects youth with local government, fostering civic engagement and inspiring future leaders in our community.
Looking ahead, 2025 promises to be a year of growth and progress. Key priorities include:
- Re-engaging with the community on the Official Community Plan (OCP), our guiding land use document.
- Breaking ground on the Little River Multi-Use Trail, an exciting project that will provide safe, accessible connections for pedestrians and cyclists while promoting active transportation.
- Advancing design work on key road projects identified in the Transportation Master Plan to address growing community needs and improve connectivity.
- Continuing efforts to expand and enhance parkland and trails as part of our commitment to environmental stewardship and quality of life enhancements, including a mid-point review of the Parks and Trails Master Plan.
- Advancing our Municipal Regional Destination Tax (MRDT) Application, which will help diversify funding support for tourism and local economic development, further strengthening Sooke’s ability to meet community needs.
In 2024, Council endorsed our 2024-2027 Strategic Plan, which focuses on environmental stewardship, community safety, infrastructure development, and economic growth. This plan ensures we meet today’s needs while laying the foundation for a sustainable, vibrant future.
