The District of Sooke has been recognized as a leader in BC for its commitment to environmental sustainability. District attention to reducing corporate greenhouse gas emissions combined with community climate change awareness have solidified Sooke as a leading environmental steward.
The joint Provincial – Union of British Columbia Municipalities (UBCM) Green Communities Committee recently acknowledged those municipalities who are working towards reducing corporate emissions.
As a signatory to the Climate Action Charter, the District of Sooke has been measuring and reporting on their efforts to reduce emissions since 2008. In 2015, the District of Sooke achieved Level 3 recognition for the first time, signifying “Achievement of Carbon Neutrality”. Level 3 recognition is a significant achievement and is the highest possible level of recognition.
“The District of Sooke is proud of our initiatives to combat climate change. Our Corporate Energy and Emissions Plan (“CEEP”) serves as an action plan to improve efficiency, reduce waste and protect the environment – showing leadership on multiple fronts and saving money in the process. Council wishes to thank staff and congratulate them for their efforts to make the municipal hall an efficient and carbon neutral operation”, said Mayor Maja Tait.
