Mayor Janet Evans
Janet is a long time Sooke resident who grew up in Port Renfrew; she excelled in sports and went on to graduate from Edward Milne Secondary School in 1972. She has been an active volunteer in the community for many years and is currently a member of the executive of the Sooke Lioness/Lions.
For 20 years Janet was employed at Sooke Forest/Lamford Forest Products in a variety of administrative positions. She and husband Ken Knight have made a hobby of house renovations, their biggest project the complete restoration of the historic Burnside House where they received recognition from the Hallmark Society. Janet resigned from her position at a local boat manufacturing business to meet her responsibilities of being Mayor of Sooke.
A supporter of forward sustainability for her community and protection of the environment, she has worked towards the successful conclusion of Sooke's first sewer system for the core area. During her first term, the municipality collaborated with the Sooke Rotary club to construct the Rotary Pier on the harbour front. She continues to pursue a facility for seniors' long-term care and demonstrates support for the community's youth.
Her tenure continues by planning for major transportation corridor upgrades, presiding over a new series of sustainable subdivision applications and land development for Sooke's newly extended boundaries.
A feature that characterizes her role as Mayor has been her passion to retain a voice for her community within the larger arena of the Capital Regional District.
