Official Community Plan

Sooke, BC – January 29, 2010

The District of Sooke held a Town Hall meeting in November and a Council meeting in December 2009 to obtain public comment on the Official Community Plan Draft #5. The comments received were constructive and have resulted in several changes being made to the document. Prior to the next draft of OCP the major policy changes to be made will include:

1) Docks
The District will work with landowners and the province to integrate proposed docks with a future waterfront walkway in the Town Centre or comprehensive development areas.
The District does NOT discourage applications by residents to the province for the installation of docks in the harbour.

2) The District will NOT expropriate land towards the establishment of a waterfront walkway.
The long term vision espoused in the Parks and Trails Master Plan (2009), Town Centre Plan (2009), and Official Community Plan (2001) is to develop a waterfront walkway between the Town Centre, Government Wharf and Wright Road. The District should consider the long term viability of a waterfront walkway to the Sooke River and Whiffin Spit only after future consultation with residents.

3) Town Centre Sprinkler Systems New commercial, mixed use and multi-family developments are not required to install sprinkling systems unless necessary to meet the requirements of the building code or National Fire Code.

Thank you to all residents for their input. The next draft of the OCP will be proceeding to Council in February for more public comment. Any questions or further comments please contact the Planning Department at 250-642-1634.
